The waymark coordinates are for the Lower Burro Mesa trailhead at Big Bend National Park, which leads to the Burro Mesa Pouroff. The 1940 writers may not have known about the pouroff, a dry waterfall located inside a box canyon down a dry wash.
From Texas: A Guide to the Lone Star State:
"Skirting the edge of BURRO MESA (3,500 alt.), the route veers southwest. At 86.1 m. (R) is DOGIE MOUNTAIN (3,700 alt.), and beyond, to the northwest, is WILLOW MOUNTAIN (3,820 alt.).
At 90 m. is the junction with State 118."
