In 2005, to commemorate his final appearance playing in the Open Golf Championship at St.Andrews, the Royal Bank of Scotland issued a five pound banknote depicting Jack Nicklaus. As well as being the first living non-royal person to ever appear on a British banknote, the note also depicts the Royal and Ancient Clubhouse of St.Andrews, the familiar granite building which sits behind the first tee of the Old Course only yards from the North Sea coast. The buildings foundation stone was laid on July 13th 1853 and completed on June 22nd 1854. The building has been gradually altered since.
