[FR] Au Moyen Age, la Lieutenance représentait l’une des deux
entrées de la forteresse honfleuraise.
Il y avait, d’après un plan de 1662, deux portes qui donnaient accès à la ville : la porte de Rouen, disparue vers 1682, sur
ordonnance de Colbert, et la porte de Caen, l’actuelle Lieutenance. Le nom de Lieutenance lui fut ainsi donné car, de 1684 à la Révolution, les bâtiments qui surmontent la fortification servaient de logement au Lieutenant du Roi. La voûte servait de passage ; des chaînes et des leviers formaient un pont-levis qui permettait de traverser le fossé ouest. La Lieutenance était,
alors, un bastion d’angle dont la partie nord a été détruite et remplacée par le quai actuel.
Au sud et à l’est du bastion, les traces d’arrachement des anciens remparts qui entouraient la ville forte sont encore visibles.
