From the Lookout at these co-ordinates, at the stepped section of boardwalk along the track, you can see stunning views of Mt Ngauruhoe across the valley and the snow-covered Mt Ruapehu's peaks behind you.

This is a mountain walk on a well formed track across the slopes of Mt Ruapehu.

The upper section of the Silica Rapids track begins from the Bruce Road, with a signpost on the right-hand side going up the road above The Chateau. There is a small carpark on the left. This section of track takes you across the slopes of Ruapehu to the Silica Rapids where there is also a viewing platform. You can return via the same track or continue on the loop track down a valley through forest to finish near the Chateau.
Along the upper track you are on open tussock land with awesome views along the way. Wear suitable shoes and carry warm clothing, the weather on the mountain can change quickly without warning. Bring a drink bottle.
