Gov. Thomas Burke was born in Galway, Ireland in 1747.Came to Virginia in 1764. Practiced medicine then switched to law. Wrote poetry and had some published oppossing the Stamp Act. Moved to Hillsborough,NC in 1774. A member of the provisional government that met in Halifax in 1776. Chosen as a delegate to the Continental Congress Dec.20, 1776. While in Philadelphia the British wear nearby and Thomas Burke joined with Gen Nash of North Carolina troops at the Battle of Brandywine. Chosen governor of NC in 1781. A surprise attack by Col Fanning of the Tories took about 200 men as prisoners. Gov Burke was taken to Charles town,SC. Escaped to return to NC but had opposition and after 10 months of governor, resigned. Died Dec 2, 1783 and buried on his farm near Hillsborough,NC.
