This beautiful Home Comfort cook stove is located in the Western Development Museum - Story of People in Yorkton. Easy access from Yellowhead/16 Hwy. and Hwy. 16A West. It is east of Yorkton just a few km.

Home Comfort Ranges were first introduced in 1864, when the first stoves were manufactured and sold direct by Culver Brothers, founders of the Wrought Iron Range Company in St. Louis, Missouri.

The stoves were made of cast iron and coated with enamel, this particular one has beautiful detailing, and three roll up compartments above the cooking surface and the water reservoir was standard equipment. This stove was first available in 1906 to 1918 when a newer model was introduced.

This recipe was given to me by a good friend and used by his grandmother. The directions are worded typical of this era.

Air Buns - Late 1800s
1/2 c. warm water
1 tsp. sugar
1 pkg. yeast
3 1/2 c. warm water
1/2 c. white sugar
1/2 c. lard or shortening
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. vinegar
9 to 10 c. flour, needin' a handful more dependin'

In 1/2 cup warm water put 1 tsp. sugar and 1 envelope yeast. Let rise 10 minutes in warm place.

In potato pot or small vessel with lid, put 3 1/2 cups lukewarm water, 1/2 cup white sugar, 1/2 cup lard or shortening, 1 tsp. salt. Add risen yeast to this and 1 tbsp. vinegar.

Put flour in 1 cup at a time. I use between 9 and 10 cups, just enough so dough will not stick to the hands. Grease pot and let rise in warm place for near two hours. Knead down. Let rise 1 hour, then form in balls size of red hyslop apples. (Any type of apple will do.)

Place on greased cookie sheets or pans. Do not put too close together as they rise a good deal. Set on cabinet or kitchen table covered with cloth, for three hours.

Bake in quick oven till brown. (Approx. 325 degrees and about 15 minutes) Remove from pans and glaze top with 1 tsp. sugar and 2 tsp. of milk.

I am estimating the temperature and baking time.
Yield: 5 dozen.
