"Symbol and landmark of the city is undoubtedly the mighty Bratislava castle, towering on a rocky ledge of the Little Carpathians that substantially completes the skyline of the capital of Slovakia. The massive rectangular building with four corner towers stands on a strategic place in Celtic times. The architecture of the castle is marked by the completion and reconstruction in the Gothic, Renaissance and during the reign of Maria Theresa. Later the castle was burned down in 1811. Reconstruction took place only in the sixties of the 20th century. The castle and surrounding area was declared in 1961 as National Cultural Monument. Today the castle serves as a representative office of the National Council of the Slovak Republic and there are placed also exhibitions of the Slovak National Museum."
