Reil was a village between Neuwied and Engers. It was first mentioned in the year 1252. The village became famous in combination with a traditon of Heddesdorf. The farmers of Reil have to pay tribute to Heddesdorf for using meadows of Heddesdorf there. The tribute was paid on after Pentecost. Today the citizens of Heddesdorf organize a horse-race from Reil to Heddesdorf on the first Tuesday after Pentecost.
In the 17th century when most of the families in Engers dies of the black death, the buildings of Engers were used by people from Reil. In subsequent times the number citizens in Reil decreased and in the 19th centiury the village was abandoned.
Today only the fountain (Pütz) of Reil exists and it documents the place where the village once was found.
Reason for Abandonment: Economic

Date Abandoned: 01/01/1850
