In North Adams, within the Natural Bridge State Park, are hand-carved names in the relatively soft marble.

The park is located east of the center of North Adams. From there, travel east to the intersection of Route 8 and Route 2. Follow Route 8 north about a quarter mile to a sign on the left. Follow the road up to the parking area. After paying the modest fee at the ranger station, walk along the trail to the natural bridge. Along the path are exposed ledge with names carved all over them.

The names on it are carved directly into the rock - some of them are deeply gouged - must have taken some time and effort.

So, where did these names come from? There are dates back into the 1800s - before when this area was a state park. The earliest one I found was 1837. Before being a park and a private attraction, it was a working mill from the mid 1800s to the 1940s. My guess is that these names were employees of the marble mill.
