The cenotaph erected in 1922 is a Historic England Grade II* Listed Building. "The statues, three large winged female figures modelled in energetically flowing style, are emblematic of Liberty, Victory and Peace: Victory, standing in the centre, holds Liberty by one hand and in the other exultantly holds up the laurel emblem of conquest; Liberty to the left breaks free, raising a flaming torch; and peace to the right reclines on one leg, with roses of remembrance in her lap, listening to the message of a dove perched on her shoulder." link

The Roman Goddess Pax
In Roman mythology, Pax (in English, Peace), was recognized as a goddess during the rule of Augustus. In Roman art She was depicted with olive branches, a cornucopia and a scepter.

Victory otherwise known as Victoria
The Asteroid
The asteroid 12 Victoria was discovered on September 13th 1850 by J.R. Hind of the Royal Greenwich Observatory in London. link

He chose the name during the reign of Queen Victoria, but it was felt to be inappropriate to have the asteroid named after a living monarch.

However W. C. Bond, of the Harvard College Observatory held that the mythological condition was fulfilled and the name stayed as it was.

It has a diameter of 112.77 km, an orbital speed of 9.5 km/s and an orbital period of 3.57 Julian Years. It is the joint 117th largest known asteroid. link

The Roman Goddess Victoria
In ancient Roman religion, Victoria was the personified goddess of victory especially over death and determined who would be successful during war. She was normally worshipped by triumphant generals returning from war. link
