Fort McKavett protected settlers and kept order on the frontier for 30 years from 1852-1883. Today the fort is a state historic site, and its cemetery serves the local population in the area.

The US Army's Fort McKavett was active on the Texas frontier between Fort Mason and Fort Stockton from 1852 to 1883. The cemetery was actually established in 1849, before the Fort was built, but was soon adopted by the US Government as the burial ground for soldiers and civilians at the fort who passed away in this remote corner of Texas.
Although Fort McKavett was finally and forever abandoned in 1883, the cemetery has remained an active very well maintained cemetery serving the local residents, there graves in the cemetery from the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries.
A tall granite memorial in the cemetery reads as follows:
"FORT MCKAVETT CENETERY
Established 1849
Land Donated by W. D. Stockton Family"
The day Blasterz were here, we estimated that about 700 people are buried here, with room for more in this beautiful rural setting.
