The plaque says, "The era of mass newspaper circulation was inaugurated in Philadelphia in 1846. The rotary printing press, invented by Richard M. Hoe, was first installed in the Philadelphia public ledger, then located at third and chestnut. Hoe's invention immediately quadrupled the printing rate of the flatbed press used by early American printers."
