In the 1800's the village of Sparta had no name. One of the founding pioneers of the village voted with the newly formed village council to have his mother name the village. Legend has it that she chose Sparta because she felt the pioneers were as strong and adventurous as the Spartans of Greece. Over the years the High School took on the Spartan as its mascot.

In November of 1984, the Fiberglass Animals, Shapes, and Trademarks Corporation (FAST), which was made famous by Zippy the Pinhead cartoons, donated this giant Spartan to stand in front of the school. Jerome Vettrus and David Oswald were both mentioned as donors for the statue. FAST has created some of Wisconsin's most iconic roadside attractions and this is one of two giant Spartans they created for the school with the other located at Sparta Memorial Field, the home of Spartan Football (American).
