The golf course at Forfar was laid out on undulating countryside east of the town by Tom Morris in 1871. James Braid redesigned the course in 1926 to the lay out seen today. Pine trees planted in the early sixties totally transformed the course, giving each hole seclusion from the others as the trees reached full height, however today, in a bid to let light in upon the greens, a thinning operation is in progress. Almost all of the fairways have furrowed ridges running across them, a legacy of when flax was cultivated on the site before the course was built.
