The "Hofgarten" was built in 1760 by elector Clemens August as garden for the Electoral Castle (in German "Kurfürstliches Schloß"). In 1818, King Friedrich III. von Preussen donated the castle including the garden to the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, the university of Bonn, on the occasion of it's foundation. Since then, the castle is being used as university main building, and the garden is a public park.

The central element of the park with a total size of 7.5 hectars is a lawn of about 200 x 130 meters. On one front end the Electoral Castle is located, on the other one the Academic Art Museum. On both sides the lawn is lined with lime alleys and more green.

The Hofgarten has become nationwide famous while Bonn was the seat of the German government. During that time, important demonstrations with up to 250,000 participants were held here. Today, the park is used mainly by students as central local recreation area.
