Jedediah Sanger is best known as the Founder of New Hartford, NY.
He enlisted as a Private in the Massachusetts Militia in 1775 before receiving a commission as a Second Lieutenant with Patterson's (1st Massachusetts) Regiment in April 1775. He then transferred to the 7th Continental Regiment in 1776. In 1777 he again moved to the Massachusetts Militia where he rose to the rank of Captain before mustering out and settling in New Hampshire, where he set up a farm. Following a near-disastrous fire, he eventually moved to what is now New Hartford in 1788.
He was instrumental in establishing the town's first mills. He entered into public office and served as first Judge of Oneida County, among others.
Sanger was married three times.
He was born February 29, 1851 and died June 6, 1829, aged 78.
