On the North side of Wisconsin 16, across from the Veterans Memorial Campground sits this simple sign marking history in the small town of West Salem, WI. The CCC had one of its two camps for Company 601 located in West Salem while the other was located in Holmen, WI. The sign states that the camp was in existence from 1933 to 1942 . Online databases put the dates of the camp from 1935-1941. An article from the Onalaska-Holmen Courier-Life from 2011 described life within the Holmen Camp while mentioning the existence of the West Salem Camp. In the University of Wisconsin data base it states that the West Salem Camp was considered a CCC Soil Conservation camp.
