The parish church of the town of Montrose was built in 1791, replacing a medieval structure dedicated to St.John the Evangelist. The steeple was built from 1832-34 to a design by James Gillespie Graham. Situated on the town`s High Street, a 36 metre tower rises directly from the pavement and is surmounted by a 31 metre spire. The steeple is octagonal with crocketed decoration and mini lancet openings, a metal weathervane sits on the top. A series of bells are situated in the tower, including one called "Big Peter". The steeple can be seen from miles away, even from the lower parts of the Grampian Mountains far away to the west where it stands out against the North Sea beyond.
