Union Station in Utica was built by the New York Central between 1912 and 1914, replacing an older station. In addition to the NY Central, The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western ran trains towards Binghamton, and the New York Ontario & Western ran trains towards Rochester and the Adirondacks.

At its height, the station had 16 tracks, and 6 islands. Now there are three tracks in use with two islands. Amtrak has three daily named trains: The Maple Leaf, The Empire Service and the Lake Shore Limited. Adirondack Scenic runs seasonal trains from Utica towards Old Forge, plus special excursions from time to time.

The station received extensive renovations in 1978 and again at the turn of the century. Today, in addition to the trains, the station also serves as a bus depot for Greyhound, United Trailways and other regional bus carriers. There is a bank inside, as well as ticketing, barber, and a spacious waiting area. The station is owned by Oneida County.

The station was added to the National Register of Historic Places on 28 April, 1975.
