1902 wurde der Münchner Akademiedirektor Ferdinand von Miller beauftragt, eine Reiterstatue von König Ludwig I. zu fertigen. Grund hierfür war die Dankbarkeit, welche die Regensburger König Ludwig I. entgegenbrachten, da sich dieser für die Restaurierung der Baudenkmäler und die Fertigstellung des Doms einsetzte."
