The First Michigan Sharpshooters regiment was organized during the winter of 1862 and 1863 at Kalamazoo, Michigan and disbanded at Jackson, Michigan, August 7th, 1865. The entire enrollment of the regiment saw active service during the Civil War. The front face of the monument lists the names of men in the regiment and the rear face lists over twenty battles in which the regiment participated. The last of which was the capture of Petersburg, Virginia, April 3rd, 1865. The first regiment was the first to enter the city and plant their flag on the court house. The monument was erected in October 1915 by the State of Michigan.
