The etchings are on a stone tablet with decorative etchings around the border. It reads:
"The Ten commandments.
I am the Lord thy God.
Thou shalt have no other god before me.
Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.
Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord they God giveth thee.
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house.
Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his cattle, nor anything that is thy neighbors.
Presented to Roswell, New Mexico by Pecos Valley Aerie 3189 Fraternal Order of Eagles April 28, 1973."
"The Ten Commandments, according to the book of Exodus in the Bible, are rules for life given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai to give to the People of Israel. Although the Book of Deuteronomy talks about Mount Horeb, it is often considered to have been a different name for the same place. The rules were written on stone tablets. These rules are important for Judaism and Christianity." (
