This mural of Sam Houston has him wearing Indian war paint. What many people don't realize is that Houston spent a lot of his youth back in Virginia with Indians, even to the point of earning an Indian name: Black Raven. Which is why there's a Raven painted above him. The other bird is a Mockingbird which is the state bird of Texas.
Houston worked with the U.S. government to negotiated treaties with several Indian tribes.
In 1835 Washington-on-the-Brazos was Gen. Sam Houston's headquarters and the concentration point for Texas army volunteers and supplies as they began their fight for independence from Santa Anna. Washington-on-the-Brazos is just 18 miles northeast of Brenham where this mural is located.
The mural has the Texas Flag, then Sam Houston with a black mask painted around his eyes, and blood running across his cheek. On the other side of Houston is the American Flag. Above is a Black Raven and a Mockingbird.
