Forfar Sheriff Court was originally based in the centre of the town in what is now the Municipal Buildings. A new building was started on a rise to the north of the town centre next to the then Forfar Prison. The foundation stone was laid on August 5th 1869 by The Earl of Dalhousie and it was opened by Sheriff Robertson on February 2nd 1871. It is one of 49 Sheriff Courts in Scotland and the building is easily identifiable by its extravagant architecture.
