In John Updike's short story "The Lucid Eye in Silver Town", a smart boy who has just graduated from high school visits New York City with his father in order to meet his rich Uncle who is in the City for business. The uncle wished to indulge his nephew who wants to buy a book about Vermeer at a bookstore. The three take a taxi to Bryant Park to visit a nearby bookstore. The father tells the boy that one can see the Empire State Building from the Park. As the boy looks toward the building, he gets something caught in his eye. The sting is so bad that the bookstore visit is abandoned and they go back to the Uncle's hotel immediately to call a doctor.
The story is published in 50 Great American Short Stories
