Keller stammte aus einer alteingesessenen Linzer Familie, der Vater war Kolonialwarenhändler, der Großvater Ratsherr und Schöffe. Er wuchs im Kreis seiner neun Geschwister in bescheidenen Verhältnissen auf. Sein Vater wollte ihm eine gute schulische Bildung als Einstieg in das Berufsleben geben und meldete ihn daher im preußischen Progymnasium (heute Martinus-Gymnasium Linz) an.
Ein Geschäftsfreund des Vaters aus Bonn entdeckte die Begabung des Jungen und vermittelte eine Lehrstelle in der Bonner Kupferdruckerei C. Schulgen-Bettendorff. So erlernte Joseph von Keller unter den damals harten Bedingungen eines Lehrlings den Beruf eines Kupferdruckers und Kupferstechers.
Früh entwickelte Keller sein Interesse an dem künstlerischen Bereich und er verstand die Lehre nur als handwerkliche Grundausbildung. Folgerichtig schlug er auch das Angebot aus, nach der Lehre als Gehilfe im Haus des Meisters zu bleiben, und das obwohl er sich in die Tochter des Meisters Bertha Schulgen (1816–1900) verliebt hatte und diese im Jahre 1841 heiratete."

"Joseph von Keller (* 31 March 1811 in Linz on the Rhine, 30th May 1873 in Duesseldorf) was a German copper engraver.
Keller came from an old-established family of Linzer, the father was a colonial merchant, the grandfather's landlord and the emperor. He grew up in the circle of his nine siblings in modest circumstances. His father wanted to give him a good school education as an entrance into the professional life and therefore registered him in the Prussian Progymnasium (now Martinus-Gymnasium Linz).
A friend of the father's father from Bonn discovered the aptitude of the boy and arranged an apprenticeship in the copper copper print shop C. Schulgen-Bettendorff. Thus Joseph von Keller learned the profession of a copper printer and copper-maker under the harsh conditions of an apprentice.
Early Keller developed his interest in the artistic field, and he understood the doctrine only as a basic craft education. As a matter of fact, he also offered the offer of remaining as an assistant to the master's house, even though he had fallen in love with the daughter of the master Bertha Schulgen (1816-1900) and married her in 1841.
