A monument to the important role coal mining has played in the region & a memorial to those who have lost their lives in mining accidents.

The monument is a mono coloured three dimensional statue of a coal miner & a one dimensional representation of a seated coal miner. The background is corrugated iron & the base crushed blue metal (basalt). The wooden frame represents the wall & ceiling braces used in the earlier days of coal mining.

Plaques outline the artist, local coal mines & background to the monument & list the names, date & coal mine of miners who have died At The Coalface.
