August Kekulé, geboren am 07.09.1829 in Darmstadt, war ein berühmter Chemiker. Er forschte und lehrte 1867-1896 am Chemischen Institut der Universität Bonn und legte dort u.a. die Grundlagen für die moderne Strukturtheorie der organischen Chemie. Insbesondere seine Forschungen zum Benzolmolekül, zur Bindungstheorie sowie die Entdeckung der Azokupplung haben dazu beigetragen. Seine Arbeiten führten zu einem Boom der deutschen Chemieindustrie, insbesondere der Farbstoffhersteller. Am 13.07.1896 starb Kekulé in Bonn und liegt seitdem
auf dem Friedhof in Bonn-Poppelsdorf.
Die lebensgroße Statue von Kekulé stammt von Hans Everding aus dem Jahre 1903 und steht vor dem ehemaligen Chemischen Institut, in dem er gelehrt hat. Sie zeigt den Chemiker stehend mit einem Mantel bekleidet vor einem Hocker. Die Statue ist Mittelpunkt eines Denkmals bestehend aus zwei Tierstatuen, Sitzbänken und einer Brüstung, die seine berühmte Benzolformel in abstrahierter Form beinhaltet. Die Statue selber steht auf einem 1,5 Meter hohen Sockel mit Relief und Inschrift.
Ähnlich wie beim Manneken Pis in Brüssel hat sich unter den Studenten der angrenzenden Institute ein Brauch entwickelt, die Kekulé-Statue zu besonderen Anlässen wir Feiertagen, Sportveranstaltungen oder auch einfach spontan entsprechend zu verkleiden oder zu schmücken.

August Kekulé was born on 07.09.1829 in Darmstadt, Germany and was a famous chemist. He researched and taught from 1867 to 1896 at the chemical institute of the university of Bonn. There, he established the basic principles of modern structure theory of organic chemistry. Especially his research on the benzene molecule, on linkage theory, and his discovery of azo coupling have contributed to fundamental research. His work lead to a boom of the German chemical industry, especially dye producers. On 13.07.1896 Kekulé died in Bonn and was
buried in Bonn-Poppelsdorf.
The life-size statue of Kekulé was made by Hans Everding in 1903. It is located in front of the former chemical institute, where he taught. It shows the chemist standing, wearing a coat, in front of a stool. The statue is the center of a monument, consisting of two animal statues, benches and a railing that includes Kekulé's famous benzene formula in an abstract form. The statue itself stands on a 1.5 meter high foot which includes a relief and an inscription.
Similar to Manneken Pis in Brussels, students of nearby institutes established a tradition to dress up and decorate the Kekulé statue on holidays, sports events, and just spontaneously from time to time accordingly.
