The staff gauge is in the cement wall of Lock C-12 on the Lake Champlain (lower) end of the lock, and, thus, is measuring the height of the lake at the head - when the lock isn't letting out water.

In Whitehall, at the lock linking the Champlain Canal to Lake Champlain, is this staff gauge embedded in the lock wall.
The staff is on the north side of the lock, embedded on the east wall. You can see it from the viewing area on the west side. However, if the lock gates are closed, you will only see the top portion. If they are open, you should be able to see the gauge to the water. It is about 10 ft. north of the gate.
The staff has a white background with black tick marks. Larger ones with white numbers on black squares are feet, and the smaller ones are in tenths of a foot. There is a mark with '00.' Numbers '1,' '2,' '3.' '4,' and '5,' sequentially mark the large tick marks. Below the '00,' the squares are there but the numbers are not. If '00,' is supposed to be the average height of the lake at this point, then the water level is about five feet below average. Since the area has been at least abnormally dry for a while, this make sense, it just surprised me that this large lake could change that much.
I could not find any access to any electronic level recordings available online. The nearest USGS site is about 4 miles north of this location. The lock is maintained by New York State Canals.
