Alfred Sully's troops marched here in the fall of 1863 after engaging in the Battle of Whitestone in North Dakota.
The fort was 270 feet square, with palisades and bastions. The American Fur Company operated near this fort until to soldiers left.
The post was abandoned in July 1866 when the military moved to new Fort Sully, about 36 miles upriver.
