Johann Wolfgang Goethe (28 August 1749 – 22 March 1832) was a German writer and statesman. His body of work includes epic and lyric poetry written in a variety of metres and styles; prose and verse dramas.

In August 1786 the German poet and world-class scientist Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749 -1832) passed through Nejdek twice. On his journey from Schneeberg in Saxony to Karlovy Vary the rocky outcrop with tower interested him to such an extent that he drew it. He wrote two letters to his lover Charlotte Stein, in one of them he writes: „It rained all day and I drew the outcrop with the tower without the aid of spirit from a shed that stands opposite. l am very happy that I can send you the drawing. Unfortunately my paper was small, so there Is a crease though the picture. However, it is meant to give you pleasure. It is a truly interesting subject."
On Sunday 28 August 1932 the Goethe Stone on Cross Peak in Nejdek was officially unveiled The design for the relief came
from the Kraslke academician painter Franz Gruss. The monument, which stood to the left of the start to the way of the cross above the present day nursery school, was removed after the Second World War.
In 1932 School Road was renamed Goethe Road (today Capek Brothers Road) in honour of this famous visitor to Nejdek.
In the years 2013 and 2014 the commemorative plaques celebrating the visits of Johann Wolfgang Goethe to the region (to Andelská Hora. Nejdek and the Svatošské skály rock formation) were renewed under a joint project of the civic association Andelská Hora, o. s. JoN - Jde o Nejdek and Rotary dub Karlovy Vary. The Nejdek artist Herman Kouba, a member of the Union of Visual Artists, designed all the reliefs. The project was supported by the regional mayor of the Karlovy Vary region, the municipality of Andelská Hora, the town of Nejdek, the association of compatriots GfCick auf Augsburg, the Czech-German Fund of the Future, and the Rotary Clubs Annaberg and Weimar. In Nejdek the J. W. Goethe commemorative plaque was unveiled on 30 August 2014.
