The Stone Dog is a 4' long by 2' wide by 2.5' high granite sculpture of a golden retriever. The dog is depicted lying down on a rectangular granite plinth with its head held high. The sculpture was created in 2013 by Getty Granite in Connecticut to replace the original Stone Dog that was stolen.

The original Stone Dog had a long history in Springfield dating back to 1888 or 1889. It was even the subject of a children's poem from "Peggy in the Park" written by Springfield poet W.G. Ballantine in 1933. After being placed in several locations around the city, it found a permanent home in front of the old Forest Park Zoo. It disappeared in 1987 from the park maintenance yard while it was in storage during the construction of the new Forest Park Zoo.
