During World War II, the Bavarian City of Bamberg was several times slated to be bombed by the Royal British Air Force. However, every time the bombers approached Bamberg, the town was invisible, covered in dense fog and the bombers were diverted to other targets.

Until this day, the people of Bamberg are convinced that it was not just meteorological luck that saved them from death an destruction, but the veil of their patron saint, St. Cunigunda.

Kunigunde of Luxembourg was born circa 975. As the wife of Roman Emperor Heinrich, she was Holy Roman Empress from 1014 - 1040.

Kunigunde died in 1040 and was canonized by Pope Innocent III in 1200. As St. Kunigunde, she is the patron saint of Franconia and is most popular as the patron saint of the city of Bamberg.

A sculpture of the towns patron saint stand at Bamberg's oldest bridge, near the old town hall.

In contemporary paintings, she is indeed often shown with a veil.
