Carrickfergus Castle as it stands to day is the result of successive renovations, strenghtening and re-arming.
The Keep is the strongest and oldest bit, 30 meters high with walls 3-4 meters thick it was built by John De Courcy along with the walls of the Inner Courtyard.
The Gatehouse and outer ward were added by Hugh De Lacy between 1228 and 1242. The towers, originally round, were cut in half during the Elizabethan period and strengthened to allow cannon to be placed on the top.
