This memorial to Brigadier General Andrew Champion (carved when he was a Colonel) stands in a place of honour inside the Great West Doors at Bath Abbey.

Blasterz spent several minutes appreciating the beautiful relief carvings on this tombstone. The angel, discarded armour, cannon, and bust of BG Champion are beautifully rendered in high relief, and tell the tale of his life and exploits for King and Country.

BG Champion served as an officer in the British Army assigned to the British East India Company, where he was appointed Commander In Chief of India and led a combined force of Indian troops and British army officers to victory against the Afghan Army in the Rohilla War.

The elaborately carved memorial reads as follows:

"COLONEL ALEXANDER CHAMPION
Died March 15, 1793
His memory remains!

Not less adorned, exalted, and endeared by domestic Virtues than by professional abilities.

He rose, in the course of 20 years active service in India, to the chief command of the company’s troops in Bengal.

And in the various situations wherein he held that honor, his zeal, his courage, and success, were ever tempered by humanity.

In private life, those who knew him well best can speak!

The esteem which was born him testifies his worth.

He was in manners plain, open, and unaffected.

Possessing a sincerity of soul Heightened by benevolence, and enlarged by hospitality."
