Saint John of Nepumuk was born Jan Velflín z Pomuku in the 1340s. In 1393, he became vicar-general of Saint Giles Cathedral in Prague.

In the same year, a violent dispute erupted between King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia and the Archbishop of Prague, Jan of Jenštejn. When John sided with the Archbishop, the King sentenced him to death by drowning and had him thrown off Charles Bridge in Prague.

John of Nepumuk was canonized under Pope Benedict XIII in 1729. Today, he is considered the patron saint of the Czech Republic. He is also the patron saint of bridges, and his statue can be found on many bridges in Bohemia, Poland and South Germany.

His statue can be easily identified as it is usually done with an Aura, symbolized by a ring of stars.
