EN: The smuggler's fountain stands next to the Stockalper Tower and in front of the church in the village center of Gondo. The octagonal stone fountain has a diameter of about 1.5 meters and has the statue of a smuggler atop the center column.

The fountain reminds of the times when Gondo was mainly a smuggler's village. The village is squeezed between steep rock faces in a canyon bottom, there is no place for agricultural land, so the inhabitants used to have little other income opportunities than illegaly transporting goods between Switzerland and Italy on dangerous alpine trails. By the way, it is only about 60 meters from the fountain to the customs station on the border.
