Spring Valley Elevation Disk - Readstown, WI - U.S. Benchmarks on Waymarking.com

This disk was set some time between 1911 and 1967 by the Wisconsin State Highway Commission. The State Highway Commission was the precursor for the Wisconsin DOT which was established in 1967. The commission was established in 1911 by the state legislature and first met on July 17th of that year. Due to the growth of the interstate system in the 1950's, the state of Wisconsin sought it wise to create a full blown Department of Transportation and thus the Wisconsin DOT was formed. To get to this disk park on the South side of the road at the West end of the guard rail and walk there. Watch for cars as this is the main road between Viroqua and Readstown. The disk itself has had some concrete poured over it but it is still readable. This disk warns both of a fine and imprisonment for disturbing it. It is located on top of the Southwest wing wall next to the railing.
