The Dhrontalsperre was put into operation in 1913 to supply the city of Trier with electricity. The cascades are renovated on the side of the water dam, where the water is drained to a high level.
It was built between 1911 and 1913, more than 100 years old. At the time, the energy-economic importance was far greater than today, according to an information sheet of the operator. However, the purpose of the storage power plant has remained: in times of high energy requirements, electric energy is to be delivered quickly. The roughly 17 meter high and 95 meter long quarry stone dams the Dhron to a 1.5 kilometer long lake.
The basin has a capacity of 530 000 cubic meters. The water from the reservoir is passed through a pressure tunnel with a diameter of three square meters and then through pipelines 100 meters deeper into the Moselle valley between Trittenheim and Leiwen.
