This free-standing altar is in Crow Wing State Park, on the site of the first Catholic mission in the area. A modern chapel was built to honor the pioneering missionary priest Fr. Francis Pierz, and this outdoor altar commemorates his associate Fr. Lawrence Lautishar.
Fr. Lautishar was a Slovene born in Austria in 1820. He came to Crow Wing in the summer of 1858 to assist Fr. Pierz. Lautishar froze to death six months later while crossing Red Lake in the course of his missionary activities.
A metal plaque is under the altar. There is no outdoor seating.
