From the
Woodland Daily Democrat:
Yolo County Sheriff's Deputy Tony Diaz was gunned down on June 15, 2008, following a high-speed pursuit of a suspect into Dunnigan. The shooter, later identified as Marco Topete, opened fire from a nearby residence, then ran right through the rest stop off northbound I-5 in an attempt to escape. He was apprehended following an all-night manhunt on the other side of the highway thanks to information radioed in by the dying deputy.
The rest area entrance can be seen in Google Street View.
