This nice example of conglomerate is located in Vomperbach in Tyrol, Austria.
In general, conglomerate is sedimentary rock. It is composed of a large amount of rounded to subangular gravel-size clasts - granules, pebbles, cobbles, and boulders. All clasts in conglomerate are larger than 2 mm in diameter. That is why conglomerate is said to be a coarse-grained clastic sedimentary rock. It is formed by the consolidation and lithification of gravel. Conglomerate also contain finer grained sediments - sand, silt, clay or combination of them, and they are called matrix. Within that matrix larger clasts are contained.
Conglomerate can be formed in following environments: deepwater marine, shallow marine, fluvial, alluvial, and glacial. Conglomerate in Vomperbach is formed in alluvial environment. It means it is formed in the areas where running water deposits clasts that were eroded from some other areas. In the past, there were much higher and stronger streams in the area and they were vital in formation of conglomerate rock in Vomperbach.
