As we could read at the info sign:
The fountain - The first fountain, build in 1726, was not only decoratie but was also the town's largest water store if there was a fire. The octagonal fountain is made of red sandstone. The sun and the fleur-de-lis on the central column are symbols of the sun king, Lous XIV, and the french King's court.
After it's destruction in 1870, the fountain was rebuild in 1992 according the original plans.
