In 1932, the “Harmonie” Bliesmengen-Bolchen male choir constructed an open-air theatre in the Ochsenklamm valley near Gräfinthal. The première of the play “Elmar” took place in the same year. The beautiful open-air theatre has been extended and modernised several times since then and, with seating for 1,600, in the meantime attracts large audiences. Each year from mid-June to the end of August over 15,000 visitors attend the popular plays put on in the open air by amateur dramatics groups. Gräfinthal open-air theatre has been managed since 1947 by the “Kulturverein Bliesmengen-Bolchen” (cultural association of Bliesmengen-Bolchen). More than 150 active members of the association work on a voluntary basis to ensure that everything runs smoothly in front of and behind the scenes. The many amateur players are often also members of the active association, which already encourages children and young people to become involved in the theatre within the framework of a youth amateur dramatics group.
