"History of the 110th Infantry (10th Pa.) of the 28th Division, U. S. A., 1917-1919" elaborates on "killed" (see link):

MANNING, Homer H. (2300191) Pvt. Co. A: Assgd. Sept. 15, '18; Killed (SF) Nov. 5, '18; Statement given by Cpl. Joseph Crompton, Co. A. 110th Inf. "Killed by a one-pounder in the Thiaucourt Sector (Bois de Handronvilles) Nov. 5, 1918. His squad were in the front line, and they sent three men forward on patrol, he was chosen, but when he reached the place where the patrol was to start from he was told that he was not needed and for him to report to his Corporal again. He had been sick a few days before and was exhausted from being on duty nearly every night and he stopped in a small shed to go to sleep instead of reporting to his Corporal. He was found dead in the same shed a few hours later, being hit with a piece of shrapnel from a one-pounder, in the head."
