Der Hauptfriedhof Altona wurde 1916 vom damaligen Gartenbaudirektor Ferdinand Tutenberg geplant. Die ersten Beisetzungen erfolgten 1923 nach mehrjährigem Bau. Heute umfasst der Hauptfriedhof Altona eine Gesamtfläche von 63 ha.
Neben den reinen Belegungsflächen, die den Charakter eines „Rasenfriedhofes“ haben, verstärken weitere großzügige Freiräume und der wunderschöne Baumbestand den Eindruck einer parkartigen Anlage. Besonders die Japanische Zierkirschenallee ist in voller Blüte einen Besuch wert.
Der Friedhof verzeichnet jährlich ca. 900 Beisetzungen, wobei die Verstorbenen den unterschiedlichsten Glaubensbekenntnissen angehören. Als besondere Grabarten sei die HSV-Grabstätte und die Baumgrabstätte für die Urnenbeisetzung erwähnt.
