This handsome maritime memorial book is located in the sanctuary of the All Hallows By the Tower church near the Tower of London. It is houses in a handsome wooden box with a clear glass panel, which allows the names that are written inside to be seen.

"THE MARITIME FOUNDATION MEMORIAL BOOK & SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING
Whilst the Commonwealth War Graves Commission provides memorials to people killed in war, many who have been lost at sea – whether during peacetime or in war – have had no such memorial. The Memorial Book for those lost at sea was established by the Maritime Foundation in 1987 to provide just such an enduring memorial. It’s a visually beautiful volume, recording in fine calligraphic hand the names and the circumstances of the deaths of people lost at sea with no known grave. Entry is open to all who have been lost from ships, inshore craft, offshore installations and from beaches and who have no known grave. A small charge of £45 is levied to cover the costs of inserting entries into the Memorial Book. A Service of Thanksgiving is held in October each year for friends and families to commemorate those whose names have been entered in the Memorial Book. This year's service is on Thursday 13 October at Noon. If you have a relative or friend whom you would like commemorated in the book, you can download an application form here.
The Memorial Book remains on permanent display at All Hallows, but it is hoped to make these records available to a much wider audience by digitising the entries and making them accessible not only to the families, but also to historians, genealogists, archivists and educationalists. To do this requires funding, and so the Lost at Sea appeal has been launched. We hope you will feel able to support this appeal to make the Memorial Book records available online in an interactive, searchable database.
