When holed up in the White Tower, the King and his army needed water.
This well, dug in 1078 by William the Conqueror when he built the White Tower as his palace, is now safely closed and on display, part of an interesting exhibit on water storage at the Tower of London.
The well is located in the Crypt, in the gift shop. It still has water in it.
