In 1948, Korczak Ziolkowski directed and supervised the first blast of rock which began the creation of Crazy Horse Memorial. He was chosen for the task and invited by Chief Henry Standing Bear, and given the mission to create the world's largest sculpture, in an effort to "protect and preserve the culture, tradition and living heritage of the North American Indians." Blasting and sculpting has continued since, with Korczak's children and grandchildren continuing the work after his death, and progress made to date is impressive. The scale of the monument is astounding - 10 times larger than Mt. Rushmore. The attraction includes the monument, a gorgeous and enormous visitor center, a comprehensive collection of Native American artwork, crafts, tools and media, workshops for sculpture and crafts, and educational resources for Native Americans. The attraction hosts over 1 million visitors a year, and is entirely funded by admissions, concessions and donations - no federal, state or local funding is accepted by the directors.
