This planet path, the „Niddataler Planetenweg“ exists since 2011 and is 5.6 kilometer long. All planets are shown, starting with the Sun and ending with the (former planet) Pluto
This planet path represents the solar system at a scale of 1:1,000,000,000. The distance between the planet is not measure at air-line, but along the cycle path along the river Nidda. So get a better experience of the size of our solar system. The next fixed star, Proxima Centauri, is 4.2 light years away from us. This would be about 4,000 kilometer at the scale used here. Thus, this star is not included at this path.
Also the size of the planets is at the scale of 1:1,000,000,000. At the places of the planets you will find a stele made of steel. Hole were drilled into the steel plate at the size of the planet. The hole for the sun is big, and very small for the planet far away. So you also get a feeling of the size.
Above the hole for the planet is the astronomical symbol of the planet. You will also find an information board at the stele.
The sun is the center of our solar system. The planet path starts (or ends) at this point. Next to the stele of the sun is a piece of art since 2012: a ball-sun by the artist Jox Reuss. Approx. 90 balls made of stainless stell form a ball with a diameter of 1.35 meter, which represents the sun.
